Is it OK to take out a DSLR camera lens constantly?

Submitted by: arthur g

I always remove the DSLR lenses from it's body after use
To answer pooky, I am doing this frequently because I have a small camera backpack that barely fits my D90 and with my 70-300 zoom lens occupying a huge space in it. I guess I will just have to buy a new bag.

Every time the lens is taken off there is the risk of dust getting into the mirror chamber, and potentially onto the sensor. So I would avoid any unnecessary removal of the lens.

You’re possibly asking for trouble in doing that (dust on the sensor).
Keep your lens on and ONLY remove it when you want to mount a different lens. That way your camera is always ready to take a shot…

Why do you do that? It saves room for storage? The other two answers so far are correct. Until you get a chunk of dust on the sensor, you’ll never (want to) remove the lens again.

You can if you want but of course you run the risk of getting dust on the sensor. Also there seems really no reason to. Especially with lower end DSLR’s constantly taking of the lens is going to put wear and tear on the mount and whatever other mechanisms are involved in lens removal. Of course it will still last a long time, but no reason to shorten that time.

Like the other users said the more you remove the Lens higher risk of getting dust on sensor. Try get a universal lens like a range 18 - 200 mm. So you don’t have to remove the Lens as much.
